European train travel 'is affordable and comfortable'
Britons looking for the ideal villa holidays and other breaks in Europe should consider travelling by train, an expert believes.
Travelling to the continent by train can be "practical, affordable, swift and comfortable", according to Mark Smith, writing for the Guardian travel blog.
However, even when train travel takes longer than the flying alternative, Mr Smith argues that the journey can become an enjoyable part of the holiday experience rather than simply a means to an end.
"I never regret the time spent watching the scenery with my feet up, spending time together with my family, catching up with my reading or even getting some work done," Mr Smith added.
Train travel may indeed be an enticing option for more mature travellers who are able to afford a luxury villa holiday this winter.
Paul Green, a spokesperson for Saga Holidays, states that there is a growing trend of older age groups taking gap years abroad - but doing it in some style by staying in high-class accommodation along the way.
