Lille Christmas market named in top ten
The Christmas market in the northern French city of Lille has been named in a top ten list of festive markets.
"You can be sipping mulled wine and eating roast chestnuts amid the festive market stalls of Lille just 80 minutes after leaving London St Pancras," stated Helen Pickles in the Daily Telegraph.
Well, make that 90 minutes, she pointed out, to allow for the ten-minute stroll from Lille-Europe station to Place Rihour.
Visitors to Lille's Christmas market can soak in the many delights on offer at more than 80 colourful stalls selling arts, crafts and local food specialities, the writer commented.
Britons may wish to take some of the most tasty titbits back to their private holiday villas, as Ms Pickles points out that the likes of Maroilles cheese, chicory pate, macaroons and soft caramels known as babeluttes are all extremely difficult to resist.
According to the city's official tourist office, other dishes that are traditional to Lille include carbannade flamande (small morsels of beef stewed in beer) and waterzoi (poultry or fish served with a creamy sauce and baby vegetables).
