Fuerteventura: This wonderful island found just 60 miles
off the Northwest African coastline, is the second largest of all the
Canary Islands yet has managed to remain largely untouched compared to
Tenerife and Lanzarote. However now there are three main tourist resorts
Corralejo, Caleta De Fuste and Jandia which offer excellent family entertainment.
The “Gaunches” were the original inhabitants of Fuerteventura
and the Canary Islands, history believes that the earliest settlement
was back in 200 BC. Their origin remains a mystery to this day, some believe
they have Egyptian relations due to mummifying corpses while others believe
they may be descendents from the lost city of Atlantis which is believed
to be close to the Canary Islands. The Guanches worked the land and had
a basic lifestyle using very primitive tools with the majority living
in caves.
Fuerteventura is famed for its many beaches which in total is over 100,
these range from the golden sand dunes in Corralejo to the miles of white
sand stretching from Costa Calma down to Jandia, and the tiny coves you
find dotted all round the island. If you love a beach holiday where all
you wish for a sun, sea and secluded beaches then Fuerteventura is definitely
for you.
If you like to play golf while on holiday, Fuerteventura is fast becoming
a golfers paradise it now offers two 18 hole PGA golf courses, with the
Fuerteventura Golf Course already considered an excellent course after
being selected to host the 2004 Spanish Open. Then second 18 hole course
Las Salinas is situated next door and has set its target to be the number
1 course on the island. There is a 3rd course in Las Playitas, Tuineje
which has been granted PGA golf academy status and offers 18 holes. There
are a further two courses planned and in development Puerto Del Rosario
Golf and Jandia Golf.

Top 5 Activities
1) Corralejo Sand Dunes
Miles and miles of rolling sand dunes, an amazing site that is a spectacular
day at the beach. The sand dunes are created by the desert sands blown
over from Africa, on the beach you will find ‘lobster’ pots
where you can sunbath in privacy.
2) Jandia and Costa Calma Peninsula
Over 20km of golden sand stretching from Costa Calma down to Jandia,
an excellent beach which is many people’s favourite on the island.
Jandia hosts the annual windsurfing competition, a Fuerteventura show
piece which is well worth seeing.
3) Isla de Lobos
Easily reachable from Corralejo Isla De Lobos is a an untouched Nature
Reserve where you can spend the day walking / hiking, lazing by the beautiful
beaches or surfing.
4) Betancuria
The old capital of Fuerteventura, is a traditional rustic mountain village
there is a wonderful restaurant and cafe open most day, you can purchase
home made spirits and wine and view the museum.
5) Puerto Del Rosario
The new capital of Fuerteventura and where most of the locals live,
here you will find things much cheaper though little English will be spoken
in the town, restaurants and bars. Though if you prefer things slightly
easier try the new shopping centre Las Rotondas where you have a great
selection of shops and most people will speak English.
