Reading this entry would imply that you’re not a natural photographer, but with a few choice hints and tips it’s easier than you might think to record your villa holiday adventures brilliantly!
Before you go jetting off on one of our villa holidays in Spain, there are a couple of basics to cover. Insurance – make sure your camera’s covered by either its own coverage or a holiday package. Don’t worry about security scans – the x-rays don’t affect digital devices. Make sure your camera has a case – a camera covered in sand after pursuit of the perfect sunset to remember your holiday in Portugal is no good! Make sure spare memory cards and the battery charger go on your luggage list.
1. Frame your shots – No fingers over the lens, palm trees growing out of your daughter’s head or ugly balconies! Look for strong lines to define your shot though (a path, road, skyline etc)
2. Make it interesting – Shooting every shot from the same distance is boring. Try to mix it up with a splattering of close-ups, long distance shots, people, sunny weather, stormy weather, landscapes, still life, local life, animals, etc. Time of day is important – the longest (and therefore most dramatic) shadows are cast in the early morning and evening – get out then for your most theatrical, evocative shots.
3. Tell the story of your villa holiday – Avoid “And this is us eating crab, and this is us packing the beach towels away….” – Think like junior school English teachers – your story needs a beginning, a middle and an end rather than random shots out of context.
